The Wilton Woods Memorial Garden

Seeking to find an outlet for a worthy display of our unity in these times of crisis, several individuals in the Wilton Woods neighborhood took the initiative to create a Memorial Garden honoring the innocent victims of the terror attacks, their families, and all the men and women who so gallantly defend our freedoms, every day.

Instigated by Lynn and Jurij Hiltajczuk, work began on September 21, 2001 to transform an unusable vacant lot into a half-acre park-like setting that serves not only as a memorial, but also as a serene refuge for anyone seeking a quiet moment for reflection. Over $50,000 worth of time and materials has been donated for this project- items such as flagpole and flag - an underground sprinkler system - the flagstone patio and stack stone sitting walls - a cast iron bench and a bird bath - yards of mulch - the crushed rock for the paths - all the trees/shrubs/perennials -a professional landscaper to do the design - and heavy equipment to turn a rocky, scruffy lot into a viable and beautiful garden. While professional landscapers used their graders and power rakes, neighbors from the ages of 7 to70 worked on Saturday mornings with lunch donated by local restaurants; the neighborhood children sold cookies and lemonade to purchase the "Children’s Tree".

The Garden, located on Ivanhoe Lane in Wilton Woods, has received several awards including those from the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc., National Garden Clubs, Inc., the Fairfax County Tree Commission, and a greatly appreciated grant from SHELL Oil Co. It was also featured in an article in the Washington Post and in a short piece on the local television news. It is now listed and described in the US Forest National Living Memorials Project Registry at www.livingmemorialsproject.net, and has its own web site at www.wwmemorialgarden.com.

The garden is open to all and provides a pleasant place for one to sit on a wall and relax, bird watch, or just contemplate the lovely landscaping.
